Easter Celebrations

"But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."  Romans 5: 8

As I was having my quiet time yesterday I was struck again with how undeserving I am of God's grace.  Christ died for me when I was the worst of sinners.  I'm ashamed to admit that sometimes I can talk myself into believing that I am a little bit deserving of Christ dying for my sins.  I have to continually come back to the truth that I could not be more undeserving.  I'm thankful that God showed me this area of sin in my life so that I could humbly give him the praise and glory he deserves on this Easter day.  Praise Him!

We've had a wonderful Easter!  The day started out a little hectic.  Earlier in the week I had picked out my outfit and Emily's outfit and had them laid out.  This morning I changed my mind about both.  I picked out a different outfit for Emily's about 30 minutes before the church service started and I changed my mind about my outfit about 20 minutes before the service started (my outfit change meant that I had to pull out the iron).  Bert could not have been more patient.  I told him as we got into the car that I will have to do better next Easter!  We only ended up being about 2 minutes late to church, which is actually really good for us on a normal day.:)

Emily woke up fever free this morning, but she had been running a low grade fever for the last couple days so we couldn't put her in the nursery.  We brought her in the service with us.  She really enjoyed the singing!  She bounced and danced to every song.  After the sermon started she started "talking" to us.  We were in the back and she wasn't being that loud, but I just had to take her out.  I didn't want her to distract anyone.  We stood in the back for awhile, I let her crawl/walk around in the lobby, and we walked outside for a few minutes.  At first I was disappointed that I wasn't going to get to hear the sermon on Easter of all days, but then a sweet thankfulness came over me.  I was filled with thankfulness for what Christ had done for me on the cross and I was filled with thankfulness for my healthy, sweet baby girl.  Here are a few pictures that I took while we were hanging out.

After church I had to get at least one family Easter picture.

Our small group got together for lunch and an easter egg hunt at Carolyn's house.  Emily was the only child so she got special accommodations for the hunt.  Carolyn hid her eggs in a separate area so that some of the competitive guys in our group would let her find some.:)

Alison and Kayla were the 1st and 2nd place winners.  I know you're jealous of their prizes.

Bert, Emily and I all came back and took a Sunday afternoon nap (Glorious!) and then got ready to go out and enjoy the beautiful weather.  We first went to a park next to the seminary.  Emily is loving to swing these days!!

Katherine and Brett came to Wake Forest this afternoon to do a few errands and they stopped by the park to hang out for a few minutes!

Emily also has a new found love for slides.  Right now we either have to slide with her or hold her as she slides.  She smiles and laughs the whole way down.

We had a wonderful time at the park and then we took a walk down Main Street (my favorite place to walk).  As we were returning to our car after our walk, an ambulance, fire truck and several other vehicles pulled up as one of the kids on the play ground had gotten hurt.  We didn't seem to be needed so we were trying to get out of the way quickly.  After we got home I started looking for our camera and realized that it had probably fallen out of the stroller when we were packing it up to come home.  I started feeding Emily her dinner and Bert jumped in the car to drive back to the park and look for the camera.  It couldn't have been more than one minute after I had been praying that we would be able to find our camera that I got a loud knock on our door.  I got up to answer it and there were 3 firemen at the door...one of them was holding my camera!!!  He asked if it was mine.  I'm sure my mouth was hanging open as I was trying to figure out how they knew where we lived.  They had done a little investigative work and recognized our apartments from the family Easter picture we had taken earlier today (picture above).  So they drove over here, looked for the Honda CRV that they could see in the picture, and then got out and asked one of our neighbors if they knew which apartment we were in!  I was in shock that they would take the time to figure out where we lived and return the camera. I thanked them about a million times and then called Bert to tell him to turn around.  (He had seen the fire truck pull in as he was pulling out of the apartment complex.)  After he got home I baked the firemen some brownies, wrote them a thank you note and then the three of us headed up to the Wake Forest fire department to tell them how much we appreciate all that they do for our community.  We really are so thankful.

It's been a busy but wonderful Easter! He is risen!  He is risen, indeed!

1 year

Emily's 1 year check-up was last week.  She got a great report.  The doctor told me that she needed to come off the bottle.  I had already started giving her a sippy cup for a few feedings, but I had not completely taken her off the bottle.  He said "she's ready....you can take her off today."  I wasn't prepared for the wave of sadness that hit me that night when I was feeding her her last bottle.  I felt like she didn't need me any more.  Bert sat down beside me to try to calm me down.:)  (Poor Emily couldn't figure out why I was crying.)  He started listing all the things she still needed me for.  I do have a big girl, but I'm thankful that she still needs her 'ole Mama for some things.:)

1 week old...

Emily's usually calm, cool and collected during doctor's appointments.  Not this visit.  They pricked her toe at the very beginning of the appointment because they needed to run some routine blood work.  Emily was NOT happy about it.  She let us know she wasn't happy for the rest of the visit.  Thankfully, Alison was there with me so she held Emily while I asked the doctor my list of questions.  I take in a list every time...don't judge.:)

Emily weighed 20 lbs and 3 oz. and she is in the 35th percentile for her weight.  Her height was 28 1/2 inches and she is in the 30th percentile for height.

I attempted a 1 year picture in her regular spot....

Emily's favorites at 1 year:
Food:  Bananas, yogurt, green beans, cheese, crackers, cheerios
Movies:  Baby Signing Time
Books:  Peek-a-boo books, "I love you through and through", and "Good Night Moon"
Activities:  Dancing, reading books, knocking down towers, taking baths, clapping
Words she can say:  Mama, Daddy (Dada), banana (nana), dog (dou), bye, hey (hi)
Words she can sign:  dog, banana, bath, bye, sleep, more, juice, hey

Sleeping Habits at 1 year:
-Takes 2 naps a day - about 1 1/2 hours in the morning and an hour in the afternoon
-It usually takes her about 10 minutes to fall asleep each time we lay her down
-She sleeps 11-12 hours at night.....almost never wakes up in the middle of the night.
-She sleeps with her bunny and a sound machine that sounds like rain (sound machine is not in the crib with her)

Things I treasure about my 1 year old:
-She loves dancing.  Any time she hears music she starts bouncing up and down.
-She loves it when Daddy comes home.  She crawls straight to him and pulls up on his leg.
-She loves grocery shopping.  She makes it so much fun.  She says hey to everyone we pass.
-She has the most precious laugh that will just melt your heart.
-She easily goes to other people (it doesn't break my heart when I leave her in the nursery)
-She can point to her nose and ears.
-She's learning to walk.  She can take about 7 or 8 steps at a time.

Emily's 1st - Part 2

We had Emily's 1st birthday party on Saturday (April 9th) at Uncle Brett and Aunt Katherine's house.

Here's Emily waking up from a nap....getting ready for her par-tay!:)

Bert and I asked Alison, Carrie and Linda if they would like to bake the cake for Emily's party for us.  (They're all three very talented in the kitchen.)  They said they would love to!  We told them we didn't care what kind of cake....we'd be happy with anything.  They surprised us with this masterpiece just a few minutes before the party started.  Isn't it amazing?!  We were SO impressed.  They stayed up until 2am the night before baking.  The cake was so beautiful we didn't want to cut it, but we quickly got over that b/c the cake was so tasty.  I've been told Alison was the ring leader in the cake making process.  We told her she should start a cake making business!:)

I was talking to my friend April a few weeks ago and she let me in on a little secret.  She said that if you join the birthday club at Harris Teeter you get a small birthday cake for free on your child's first birthday.  We picked up this sweet little birthday for Emily to destroy.

Getting ready to open presents.

I love her sweet expression in this picture.  Please notice the precious outfit that Emily is wearing.  Kayley Harmon let her borrow it.  Kayley is only 20 months old so her mom, Keri, is the one who offered it and mailed it to us.  Thanks to Keri and Kayley!  It was perfect!!

Time for cake.  I honestly was not sure how Emily was going to do with the whole cake thing.  She usually doesn't like anything to be on her tray.  If I set her sippy cup in one of the cup holders she throws the cup on the floor before I can blink my eye.

She started out just sticking one finger in the cake and then moved on to both hands.

Finally she decided that it would be best to just go face first.  I'm really not sure where she got this idea. I promise Bert and I do not eat like this at our house.:)

Well, Emily was a big fan of the cake!

Emily just outside hanging out with the guys.

Our family.

After we finished dinner we were all sitting around chatting and I realized it was way past time to give Emily her bottle.  On my way to get it and realized that we had forgotten to put it in the refrigerator when we got to Brett and Katherine's.  A few days before we had switched Emily from formula to whole milk.  I guess we still wern't used to needing to keep the bottle cold.  Katherine and Brett live about 20 minutes from our apartment.  So instead of a nice relaxing end to our day we were all running around trying to quickly get packed up so that we could get Emily home, fed and in the bed.  Haha.  We all had to sing to her on the way home b/c she wasn't overly happy about the situation.

It was such a wonderful day!  I'm so thankful that we were able to celebrate the day with family.  Thanks to everyone that could, for making the trip up.

Emily, we love you so much!  You are an absolute joy!  We're constantly praying for you.  Praying that you would grow up to trust Christ and serve Him with all that you are.  Happy 1st birthday sweet girl.  Love, Mama and Daddy
